Steer Safely into the New Year

With 2022 in our rearview mirror and 2023 just around the next turn, it’s time to decide which parts of our lives we would like to change and improve upon. Why not include a renewed commitment to becoming a safer driver among your New Year’s resolutions? Here are some ways that you, as a professional driver, can help ensure your safety on the road as 2023 rolls in:

  • Take care of the basics. Today’s vehicles are built to last, but even the toughest ones can break down if not properly maintained. Perform a proper pre-trip inspection as required by federal regulations, know how to identify safety defects and get them repaired promptly.

  • Prepare for your trip. Plan your route with spare travel time, and make driving adjustments as weather, light and roadway conditions change. If you are running late, don’t try to “make up time.” Rather, stay within the speed limit and reach your destination with as little risk as possible.

  • Buckle up. Wearing your seat belt is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and others while driving. If you are in a crash, it will keep you in your seat and help you maintain control of your vehicle.

  • Be a good role model. Obey the rules of the road, correct unsafe driving habits and, importantly, share the road with courtesy. Recognize the rights of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. As a professional driver, it’s your job to set the standard for safety.

  • Pay attention. Driving is a serious responsibility that demands and deserves your undivided attention. Even a momentary distraction can take your mind off the road, putting you and others in danger.

  • Use your eyes to your advantage. The No. 1 active safety system in your vehicle is your eyes. Look as far ahead as possible, and use your mirrors and scan side to side to maintain a 360° picture of what’s going on around you.

  • Maintain the proper following distance. Leaving sufficient space provides you with time for a safe response should a hazardous situation develop. Carefully manage speed and space so that you can see and be seen in plenty of time in any weather, road or traffic condition.

  • Drive defensively. Anticipate the worst behavior of others. Add extra space around your vehicle and drive at slower speeds to allow more time to avoid problems caused by their poor judgment.

  • Take steps to combat driver fatigue. Understand the importance of the quantity and quality of sleep, of scheduling and their effects on your ability to perform as a driver. Importantly, eat well, stay fit and get plenty of rest before getting behind the wheel.

While making New Year’s resolutions is easy, many people often find that keeping these promises is a little harder than they originally thought. However, becoming a safer driver is one simple—and smart—resolution that should be on the top of every driver’s list for 2023.
