MOTOR VEHICLE DEATHS CONTINUE RISING TREND IN FIRST HALF OF 2016

Motor vehicle deaths in 2016’s first half jumped by 9% compared to the same period in 2015, and 18% compared to 2014’s first half, according to preliminary estimates by the National Safety Council (NSC).

The estimated 19,100 deaths on U.S. roads continue a rising fatality trend the NSC says shows no sign of decreasing.

“Our complacency is killing us,” says Deborah A.P. Hersman, NSC president and CEO. “One hundred deaths every day should outrage us. Americans should demand change to prioritize safety actions and protect ourselves from one of the leading causes of preventable death.”

The NSC says the stronger economy has been a significant contributing factor to the rise in fatalities, as have lower fuel prices, and higher miles driven.

Additionally a survey of more than 1,000 newly licensed drivers between the ages of 15 and 17 reveals 35% would use social media when behind the wheel, with 21% admitting they would video chat and drive at the same time and about 43% saying they're willing to text and drive.

The hardest hit states with respect to fatalities since 2014 have been Florida (43% increase), Georgia (34%), Indiana (33%), California (31%), North Carolina (26%), Illinois (24%) and Kentucky (24%).

Some safety advocates have also declared that over the coming Labor Day weekend, the holiday could be the deadliest Labor Day on U.S. roads in eight years.

The NSC estimates about 438 people will be killed in traffic crashes during the Labor Day holiday weekend, September 2 – 5.

Please enjoy the weekend and drive with care.
