Be Prepared to Get Pulled Over This Week
Reminder: It's Operation Safe Driver Week
Operation Safe Driver Week, co-sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and the FMCSA, will be held October 16 – 22.
Law enforcement agencies throughout North America will engage in heightened traffic safety enforcement and education aimed at combating unsafe driving behaviors by commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger car drivers.
Unsafe driving causes more than 88% of large truck crashes and 93% of passenger vehicle crashes.
The Operation Safe Driver program was created to help reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries involving large trucks, buses and passenger vehicles due to unsafe driving behaviors.
The behaviors that law enforcement will be tracking with increased CMV and vehicle traffic enforcement throughout the campaign week are:
- Speeding
- Failure to use a seatbelt while operating a vehicle
- Distracted driving
- Failure to obey traffic control devices
- Traveling too closely
- Improper lane changes
CVSA is also holding enforcement events in several areas of North America throughout the week. To help you find the agency or department responsible for overseeing the events in your area, CVSA has an online list of the relevant agency contacts in your state and region.
