FEDERAL OFFICIALS RESTRICTING TRAVEL AROUND REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
The Republican National Convention will be held in Cleveland, Ohio this year, from Monday, July 18 through Thursday, July 21. Law enforcement and public safety agencies have announced several security and traffic restrictions that will be in force beginning Sunday, July 17 and lasting over the entire four days of the event.
The presidential nominating convention is expected to draw as many as 50,000 people to the surrounding area, and fleets are encouraged to plan ahead for the major congestion that is anticipated to occur.
Officials plan to close most of the roads immediately surrounding the main venue area, including Quicken Loans Arena, Progressive Field and the Huntington Convention Center a few blocks away.
Traffic on other roads in that area will be restricted to some degree and includes a nearby stretch of the very busy Innerbelt Freeway (Interstate 90), where commercial vehicles and other traffic will be able to operate on just one lane at times, and the road will close nightly for six hours.
All commercial vehicles are restricted from traveling westbound on the Innerbelt Freeway between East 21st Street and the Interstate 490 interchange. All commercial vehicles are restricted from traveling eastbound on the Innerbelt Freeway between the Interstate 490 interchange and Prospect Avenue. The Innerbelt Freeway will be closed in both directions from Monday through Thursday, 8:00 pm to 2:00 am.
